Stephen, a leader within the Jerusalem church, is the first known Christian martyr. Rather than making the church vengeful or angry, Stephen’s death spurs on bold gospel proclamation. The Apostle John’s first epistle encourages followers of Jesus to adorn that proclamation with demonstrations of loving action, both inside and outside the church.
